Consider whether to use one of the general-purpose AI models (e.g. ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini) or investigate one of the dedicated archival platforms (e.g. Pen To Print, Transkribus, FamilySearch full-text search, OCR2Edit, Koncile)
Plan for the best results by writing a good prompt:
Be specific about the source material
Set clear expectations for uncertainty
Request faithful reproduction, not interpretation
Ask for contextual notes
Specify formatting
Break up long or difficult documents
Understand some of the context and concerns around using AI
Provide clear source materials, and limit the volume of text submitted
Cite and record AI interactions
Realise AI’s limitations and make sure you verify independently
Be aware privacy - your text may be reused by the AI
Consider bias and policy of the AI tool
